What is Marruk
The award-winning Marruk Project is a First Nations-led youth theatre initiative was born in the Mallee in 2009. The Project uses performing arts to strengthen culture and create opportunities for Elders, young people and community members to get to know each other by sharing their histories. The project was awarded first place in the 2014 Indigenous Governance Awards.
The Fairfax Youth Festival is proud to have supported Bayden Clayton, an original member of Marruk and now a highly regarded youth leader in the community, and community members to reignite the successful Marruk Project, to further develop a sustainable cultural thread for young people in the Murray-Mallee. We have done this with the incredible guidance of former members of Marruk, elders and with the support of community artist Angela Frost.
Bayden Clayton (27) Creative Producer of the Marruk Project & Fairfax Youth Associate
"Marruk aims to enhance cultural bonds and promote intergenerational connections within the community by embracing the tradition of storytelling. This endeavour will involve young artists working alongside Elders and experienced Aboriginal facilitators to create and practice performances rooted in Indigenous heritage. Additionally, participants will engage in a range of Fairfax Festival workshops and immersive experiences."
